Cosmic Dance
In 2021, I began to use biological stains from my own lab as abstract color that uses spraying of water, acid or base into dried powders applied in a dance-like motion that is inspired by Chinese brush painting. Forms made using pipetted dots of Black 3.0 across topological grids gave structure between the swaths of color. This technique has been used to show biological organic forms, then cosmological images inspired by the Hubble and Webb space images and Einsteinian curved space time and most recently iconography from different religions (e.g. Shiva). For over ten years, I have sketched dance rehearsals including the New York City Ballet, David Dorfman Dance (NYC), Urbanity (Boston) and the National Ballet School (Havana). In these rapid sketches one captures the dynamism and effort of the moment and the true creative art of the dancer and choreographer. The current show, Cosmic Dance combines these two investigations using the colors to fill the negative space between figures in dance.
